At recess time, put your pennies into your grade level jar to earn your grade positive points. At the same time put your silver hange into another grade level's jar to earn them negative points. At the end of the week, the winning grade level with the most points will win a very exciting prize to be announced on February 7th. (Kindergarten classes will be competing between classrooms instead.) If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please contact Rachelle Goldfarb at [email protected] or Mrs. Standley at [email protected] Accelerated Reader Program (AR) - New Version is Ready! Our newest online AR system has been installed. PTA provided funds over the summer from our fundraising efforts last year. The new computer online system will allow students to access 45,000 plus quizzes online on the latest books. Quizzes for newly published books will also be added throughout the year so students can read brand new books that are currently popular in our book stores and libraries.
Students are recognized for meeting their AR goals and we celebrate their success with special certificates at our Awards Assemblies. This AR program also extends to our local junior high (Arroyo Seco) which uses the same program for seventh and eight grade. We look forward to seeing the students enjoy the new program as they improve their reading comprehension, which is a major Common Core Standard! Performing Arts Center Partnership for 2013 - 2014 We have already kicked off another exciting season with the Performing Arts Center at College of the Canyons! Last Friday we had an exciting performance at Rosedell for our 5th and 6th graders call "SOULysztik" featuring the history of Hip Hop dance, music, and culture. This year there will be a number of "bus in" performances at the Center and in-house assemblies at Rosedell. Bus-in shows have limited tickets for parent chaperones. Teachers will select chaperones from their parent volunteer list. The school assemblies are open to ALL parents, so please join us. Thank you to the PTA for helping us to provide these high quality and memorable educational experiences for our students.
This year's assemblies at Rosedell include: Crayon Court (January 24th - Pre-k/K), Aesop's Fables (March 7th - Grades 1, 2, 3), LA Opera - Don't be Afraid, It's Just Opera! (Date TBD - Grades 3, 4), SOULysztik (September 20, Grades 5, 6), and A Visit with Great African Americans (February 7 - Grades 3, 4 and 5/6 - two shows). Bus In Assemblies (at the PAC) include: Kuniko (Nov 8 - Grades 1, 2, 3), Peking Acrobats (Jan 31 - Grade 4), Let Freedom Ring (February 21 - Grade 5), and Ladysmith Black Mambazo (February 27 - Grade 6) Box Tops, Labels for Education, Tyson Project A+, and My Coke Rewards News:

Fundraising Notes: The 2013-2014 Fundraising Campaign is in full swing! Our Fall Fundraiser kicks off Sept. 6th, offering beautiful wrapping paper, gift items and select food items provided by West Coast Fundraising. The two-week campaign features an online store that makes placing orders from out of town quick, easy and very affordable. In addition, the campaign provides daily incentives and rewards for both students and teachers. Orders are due on September 20th.
There are many more fundraising opportunities available that are ongoing - escrip, shoparoo, a gift card program (get your cards for the holidays while supporting Rosedell), and many more. Please look on the www.Rosedellpta.com website. Also, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact Susie Unkeless, 818.399.7455, [email protected]. Attendance - If your child is absent from school, we prefer that you call the office instead of sending a note, as notes sometimes don't make it to the office. Please dial 294-5335 and leave the following information: child's name, date of absence, teacher, and reason in detail (example: cold, fever, flu). If you do this, there is not need to send a note on the day your child returns to school. Click here to report an absence online.
Tardies - Tardiness takes away learning time from ALL students in the classroom, not just the child arriving late. The teacher must stop their teaching to bring the tardy child up to date, collect their homework, change the attendance sheet, etc. As a result, the smooth flow of the classroom is interrupted. Students are considered tardy when they arrive after the 8:10am bell and enter the classroom after all the other students. Please make an extra effort to have your child here on time. It certainly gives them a better start to their day.
Prime Time Learning - Prime time protects classroom instructional time and provides teaching time free of interruptions. Between 8:10 and 10:40am, no phone calls will go to the classrooms unless they are of an emergency nature. Late lunches, messages, or forgotten assignments will be held in the office and picked up by teachers, aides, or students during recess time. Parents can assist the school with prime time by making sure their child has all of their needs before leaving home.
Lunch Program - The Saugus District contracts with the Santa Clarita Valley Schools Food Services Agency for school lunches. Information will be sent home the first day of school. Lunches and "2nd chance" breakfast during recess can be purchased on a daily basis (lunch for $2.75 and breakfast for $1.50). Snacks and milk can also be purchased from the "Red Cart" at recess and noon. Menus are now on the web. You can also add lunch money to your student's account online. Visit www.scvsfsa.org.
Early Release Wednesday Schedule - Every Wednesday is Early Release Day. ALL Grades (Kindergarten thru 6th) will start at the regular time (8:10am) and dismiss at 1:44pm.
Minimum Day Schedule - on Minimum Days Kindergarten thru 6th grade will start at the regular time (8:10am) and dismiss at 12:30 pm.
Birthday Celebrations - Due to the increasing concerns with food allergies and the district's Wellness Policy focusing on health education, we are continuing with our birthday celebration policy. If you would like to celebrate your child's birthday with their class, please send in a new book for the teacher to read to the class. After the book is shared with your child's class, it will be donated to their class or school library.
Please do not send drinks, cupcakes, edible treats, balloons or flowers to school. Also, please remember that teachers and staff cannot distribute class address lists or hand out invitations for birthday parties. Medication - If your child needs to take medication at school, please bring the medication in the original bottle along with the Dispensing Prescription form to the office. You may bring your medication in on Thursday, August 15th. If you have any questions, please call Kathy Jaennette, Health Assistant, at 294.5335.
Drop-Off/Pick-Up Procedures: Playgrounds are supervised 30 minutes prior to the school day. Parents are not permitted to wait on the playground with their child for supervision and safety reasons. Please park and pick-up your kindergartners from the kindergarten playground. If you drive your child to school, please use the extended Valet Lane located on Urbandale Avenue. Due to student safety, the parking lot on Urbandale Avenue will be closed in the afternoon from 1:50-3:15pm each day. The Valet Program will be fully up and running about 2 weeks after school begins once the Sheriff’s Department trains new students.
Should parents need to drop something off in the office or pick-up a child, please park in the appropriate location. There are also two disability parking spaces located close to the office on Urbandale and in the parking lot by the kindergarten playground. These are only for persons who have the proper DMV disability plaque. Walking To And From School: We encourage our students who walk to and from school to walk in pairs or groups and be responsible for following school behavior standards. They need to take care when crossing streets and to use school crosswalks. It is expected that at the dismissal of school, students will walk directly home. The school does not provide supervision for after hours play on the playground. Crossing guards are provided on Bouquet Canyon, Haskell Canyon and Urbandale
Avenue. Children are not to remain on the school campus unsupervised from 2:09-2:59pm waiting for older siblings. Bikes: Students may ride their bikes to school after they have returned a current 2013-14 school year bike permit, with parent and student signature, to the office. Students must wear helmets when riding bikes to school. Each bike must have a chain and lock and must be locked in the bike rack. Locks may not be shared with others. Students are expected to follow all traffic rules when riding to and from school. Violation of bike safety rules or causing damage to other students’ bikes will result in the loss of the bike permit. For safety reasons, it is recommended that students under third grade not ride their bikes to school. The bike rack is located at the entrance on Urbandale Drive.
HEELIES, SKATEBOARDS, SCOOTERS, ROLLERBLADES, BIKES, AND SKATES OF ANY KIND ARE NOT ALLOWED ON SCHOOL GROUNDS OR IN THE PARKING LOT AT ANY TIME. Dress Code: “Dress for Learning” is the first step toward maintaining the safety of students within
our school and community and enhancing the learning process. Apparel and grooming must not inhibit participation or cause disruption in any phase of the instructional program. Casual clothing is recommended or school except for special “dress-up” occasions. Tennis shoes are essential as students do not change for P.E. and feet need to be protected. Students may wear sun-protected clothing (Education Code 35183.5) including, but not limited to, hats while outdoors. In order to assist us in maintaining an effective learning environment and to keep the focus of the classroom on learning, the following attire is appropriate for students attending our Saugus Schools. Jeans, cords, denims, slacks, simple dresses, skirts, and shorts (dresses, skirts and shorts must reach fingertip when student stands with an arm down the side of their body) Shirts, t-shirts, blouses, and sweatshirts Tennis shoes with flat, non-skid soles; socks are to be worn at all times The Following is inappropriate for students: Oversized and baggy clothing, cut-offs (i.e. shirts, pants, jeans, tank tops with oversized armholes, pants are to fit around the waist and not drag on the ground Clothing with inappropriate language or advertisements, or any reference to alcohol, drugs, tobacco, or gangs Gang related clothing (i.e. long belts, trench coasts, chains, chain wallets, caps worn backwards, etc.) Tube/halter tops, spaghetti strap tops/dresses Bare midriffs or revealing tight-fitting shirts and shorts Undergarments which are not covered by clothing Sandals, Jellies, open-toed shoes, sling backs, platform shoes, backless shoes, cleats, and shoes with retractable wheels Expensive and long dangling jewelry, especially earrings, that may pose a safety hazard Make-up or tattoos Unusual hair color (i.e. purple, green, etc.) Our main concern is for the safety of every child. When children are dressed according to proper guidelines, safer conditions should exist for everyone. If children come to school dressed appropriately, parents will need to be called to bring in a change of clothing. 2013-2014 School Calendar - the Saugus School Board has approved the 2013-2014 school calendar.
